Huttig tractor/trailer drivers are responsible for the operation of a tractor and trailer (24 to 53 feet in length) some with capacity upward of 30 tons to transport materials to and from specified destinations in a safe manner.  Truck drivers are the eyes and ears of our company in many ways and have more customer interaction than most employees. The ability to maintain positive customer interactions is vital along with a commitment to safety and DOT regulations are crucial. The work of a driver is repetitive and structured with prescribed routes and routines that are largely consistent. This position will also work in the warehouse when driving duties are completed.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  • Drives truck to destination in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Completes pre-trip, intermittent, and post-trip inspections and checks the straps, brakes, tires, and all lights, and security of the load.
  • Compares and proofs the product on the truck with the paperwork.
  • Delivers and off-loads material in accordance with route, paperwork, and desires of the customer.
  • Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations (DOT).
  • Maintains telephone, radio, or electronic contact with supervisor to receive updates/delivery instructions.
  • Cleans inside of truck and trailer.
  • In-cab usage of people net routing system
  • Stays up-to-date and compliant with all DOT regulations including medical cards and point system.
  • Reads customer, shipping order, or requisition to determine items to be moved, gathered, or distributed
  • Receives shipments by processing paperwork, checking contents, and moving materials from receiving areas to storage or to other designated areas using a forklift, hand truck, or rolling cart
  • Compiles worksheets or tickets for customer specifications
  • Assembles customer orders from stock and places orders on pallets or shelves, or conveys orders to packing station or shipping department
  • Uses computer to enter records and compiles worksheets or tickets from customer specifications
  • Performs daily cycle counts, locates and identifies inventory adjustments and errors.
  • Responsible for attending all safety training and meetings, being aware of and complying with up-to-date OSHA and company safety policy
  • Performs routine maintenance on tools used including cleaning and checking to ensure proper functioning, and notifying a supervisor of larger repairs or malfunctions

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE ' High School diploma or GED and minimum two years' driving experience, with references.

LANGUAGE SKILLS ' Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

CUSTOMER INTERACTION SKILLS Ability to communicate effectively with customers, maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, and solve customer issues in a timely manner, with a positive attitude.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS ' Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS ' Meets all federal and state driver's license regulations. Must have CDL Class A license.

REASONING ABILITY ' Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS ' While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and frequently required to walk and talk or hear.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The incumbent is frequently required to stand and reach with arms and hands. While performing duties of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or lift. May frequently lift and/or move heavy and awkward material. Specific vision requirements to include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to regularly lift, move, hold or push up to 150 lbs of material.

WORK ENVIRONMENT ' The work environment requires the employee to work regularly near moving mechanical parts and to be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee occasionally is exposed to harsh outside weather conditions. This position may require the employee to use safety equipment such as, protective eyewear, earplugs, gloves, safety shoes etc. The work environment includes outdoor labor and involves varied environmental conditions.
